Docter conceived Inside Out in October 2009 after observing changes in his daughter's personality as she grew older. The project was subsequently green-lit, and Docter and co-director Ronnie del Carmen developed the story, while consulting psychologists and neuroscientists in an effort to accurately portray the mind.

Leave No Trace (2018)

It's not easy for recent movies to get a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating, given the sizeable amount of reviews that are taken into account. That makes Leave No Trace's feat even more impressive. It's the movie with the most reviews featured (a total of 252) to get a 100% score.

This means every last review from critics was positive. Close to 480 films with at least 20 reviews have achieved a 100% score, with many coming very close. Greta Gerwig's “Lady Bird” had a 100% rating with 196 positive reviews before a critic submitted a negative one, knocking it down to 99%.

So when a movie such as “Black Panther” gets a certified “fresh” 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, we interpret it as a film that is near perfection, while a film such as last year's “The Emoji Movie” that lands around 9 percent, must be a steaming pile of garbage.

If the positive reviews make up 60% or more, the film is considered "fresh". If the positive reviews are less than 60%, the film is considered "rotten". An average score on a 0 to 10 scale is also calculated.

The results of the failure to grieve is Riley's slide into depression, because again, depression is a protective mechanism that buffers us against the unrelieved pain of loss. In others' hands, the story could have been either a dark tragedy, or a story of heroic repression of sadness.

Joy makes it back, but it is not until she is safe that she realizes Bing Bong isn't with her. Bing Bong then starts to fade away, as he asks Joy to take Riley to the Moon for him, one of the saddest Pixar deaths.

Riley and Troy are the only characters in the film to have emotions of both genders. According to Pete Docter, this was done to make them as diverse as possible, while the emotions of other persons were uniformized for quick readability. He states that it's "a little phony, but hopefully people don't mind."

By creatively and empathetically portraying the inner workings of Riley's mind, Inside Out reminds us that understanding and embracing our emotions while prioritizing positive relationships fosters a sense of safety and belonging despite the challenges we encounter.

She is missing anticipation, trust, and surprise. Anticipation seems to have been lumped in with fear, and surprise and trust lumped with joy. She's only missing surprise which fits your theory of a single missing emotion.

For Riley, Bing Bong's sacrifice symbolizes the end of childhood. Simply put, she's way too old for imaginary friends. She's moved on to imaginary boyfriends—although she'll outgrow that, too.
