The term in-orbit-testing (IOT) is used to describe the wide range of tests that are carried out on a satellite after launch. For the purposes of this paper, the meaning of IOT is restricted to the testing of the broadcast payload. It is required for three main purposes: beginning of life testing to ensure that characteristics have not significantly changed during launch and deployment; periodic testing throughout the lifetime of the satellite to confirm that performance remains within specifications, to identify performance trends, and to predict the end of useful life; and investigation of anomalies. The author describes an IOT system designed to test satellites operating on the UK channels of the WARC-BS(77) plan for broadcasting satellites.<

This paper describes the history, functions, and usage of the program that was used to analyze the plans for direct broadcast satellite service developed in the course of the 1983 Regional Administrative Radio Conference for ITU Region 2. Given the requirements for direct broadcast service by the administrations, the conference delegates (1) developed the appropriate technical parameters; (2) made tentative assignments to the orbit locations, frequencies, and polarizations of space stations, (3) calculated the interferences and margins of such assignments through the use of the Spectrum Orbit Utilization Program (SOUP); and (4) iterated this procedure until an acceptable plan was found.

Geosynchronous systems, in which the satellites maintain a high orbit that keeps them over a fixed spot on the Earth's equator, have several advantages in terms of long satellite life and wide area coverage by a small number of satellites. They have the disadvantages of round trip latencies that exceed a half a second, poor coverage and inadequate elevation angles (to avoid building radio shadows in urban areas) at the high latitudes. These weaknesses are addressed by the low earth orbit systems, which follow elliptical orbits, allowing them to provide reduced delays and better coverage and elevation angles when close to their orbital perigee. However, LEOs require substantially greater numbers of satellites to provide adequate coverage, and these will need more frequent replacement.

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is an effective treatment for the motor symptoms of movement disorders including Parkinson's Disease (PD). Despite its therapeutic benefits, STN-DBS has been associated with adverse effects on mood and cognition. Specifically, apathy, which is defined as a loss of motivation, has been reported to emerge or to worsen following STN-DBS. However, it is often challenging to disentangle the effects of STN-DBS per se from concurrent reduction of dopamine replacement therapy, from underlying PD pathology or from disease progression. To this end, pre-clinical models allow for the dissociation of each of these factors, and to establish neural substrates underlying the emergence of motivational symptoms following STN-DBS. Here, we performed a systematic analysis of rodent studies assessing the effects of STN-DBS on reward seeking, reward motivation and reward consumption across a variety of behavioral paradigms. We find that STN-DBS decreases reward seeking in the majority of experiments, and we outline how design of the behavioral task and DBS parameters can influence experimental outcomes. While an early hypothesis posited that DBS acts as a “functional lesion,” an analysis of lesions and inhibition of the STN revealed no consistent pattern on reward-related behavior.
