Atreus' Best Moments in God of War Ragnarok (2024)

Atreus is one of the main characters in God of War Ragnarok following the revelation in God of War (2018) that his mother had intended on calling him Loki, and that a prophecy was foretold about him. In between the events of God of War and Ragnarok, Atreus learns all he can about who he is supposed to become, leading to an epic journey that many players enjoyed in this franchise's latest installment.

There are a lot of great moments in God of War Ragnarok that revolve around Atreus. Portions of the game that allow players to control the young half-god especially show how much he has developed in a few short years, proving to be one of the best arcs in the entire series.

Atreus Had a Dream that Would Change His Life

Atreus' Best Moments in God of War Ragnarok (1)

One of the best moments in Ragnarok begins when Atreus falls asleep after getting into an argument with Kratos. His dream starts off by remembering some of the darkest times he faced in 2018's God of War, particularly after he learned that he was a god and started treating those around him poorly. Dozens of younger versions of himself run around and through him, as Atreus regrets the person that he once was.

Atreus soon finds himself in Jotunheim, where he encounters a girl named Angrboda. She teaches him a lot about Frost Giants, as well as a prophecy that would change his life: the prophecy foretold that he would team up with Odin and betray Kratos, leaving his father to die. Not wanting anything bad to happen to Kratos, Loki becomes determined to manipulate Odin and betray him instead.

Atreus Goes to Asgard to Manipulate Odin

After Atreus wakes up, he runs away from his family and decides to go to Asgard. Odin invited Atreus there in the beginning of the game, but he had initially refused to go. However, now having a plan that he believed would defy fate, he decides to take one of Odin's ravens and travel to a new realm.

Atreus encountered a few Asgardians before crossing paths with the All-Father, but ultimately Odin saves Atreus from the wrath of Heimdall before showing him a broken mask that he believes will give him absolute knowledge about godly mortality if all the pieces are put together. Odin declares that if he had all of the pieces of the mask, he would have no reason to fight anyone Loki cared about, leading to a new era of peace. Atreus agrees to help Odin locate the broken pieces of the mask, leading him to go on a thrilling quest with unexpected allies - Odin's relatives - in order to achieve both his and Odin's goals.

Atreus Makes a Choice to Betray Odin

At the end of God of War Ragnarok, Odin proves that he was always, in fact, Loki's enemy. Throughout a majority of the game, Odin disguised himself as Tyr - a companion Atreus trusted after learning all about the Norse god of war's heroic deeds in the past. Brok, one of Atreus' friends, suspected that Tyr wasn't who he seemed, leading to his death at the hands of the All-Father in Sindri and Brok's home. Loki and his remaining comrades gathered fighters from the Nine Realms to fight Odin's army, kickstarting Ragnarok through a huge battle in Asgard.

The battle would come to an end when Atreus, along with Kratos and Freya, fought against Odin. Atreus had all the pieces of Odin's mask and was tempted to use it, but instead broke the mask in half before trapping the All-Father's soul in a marble. Atreus, Kratos, and Freya were unsure of what to do with it, leaving Sindri to destroy it; killing Odin out of grief at the loss of his brother. With Odin gone, there is peace across the Nine Realms and Atreus decides to continue his journey to learn more of who he is destined to become, a journey that will likely continue in some kind of future Atreus-led installment for the series.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
